Viva Voce is the choral tale of Cagliari woven through the memories and impressions of those who live in and traverse the city. It represents a key moment in my artistic research on how sonic storytelling can alter spatial perception, fostering a sense of belonging to places.
The sonic narrative of Viva Voce emerges from individual memories to form a composite mosaic of collective memory, transforming places from mere backdrops into living collective organisms that safeguard memories and identities.
Monuments and streets thus become stories of private emotions and affections, shared ones that, in the power of their spontaneity, manage to transcend time.
The voices in this project belong to those who answered the call to send a short voice message recounting a place or monument in the city through a memory or suggestion. I listened carefully to every message received and edited them, striving to preserve their freshness and spontaneity intact. Each voice is a precious fragment of lived life that allows listeners to step, for a moment, into a world brimming with emotions, all different, all authentic.
Viva Voce invites us to rediscover our city and see it with new eyes. It is a celebration of a community's collective storytelling, one that makes us feel part of something greater, with a force capable of building bridges between people, eras, and diverse places.
A project conceived and created by M. Cristina Marras for Monumenti Aperti (a major national event born in Sardinia that opens historical, artistic, and archaeological sites to the public), aimed at giving voice to monuments and streets through the community's stories and memories, realised in collaboration with Giuseppe Murru and RadioX.
